Electric Car

What Is It?

Electric vehicles use stored electric charge (usually in a battery or fuel cell) to drive an electric motor, which powers the vehicle. As the vehicle burns no fuel, it has no direct emissions.

How Is It Used?

Although all-electric vehicles are some way off in being reliable and practical, many new vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius and Lexus GS 450H. These hybrid vehicles incorporate a normal petrol engine and fuel system, along with an electric motor and battery. The vehicle intelligently switches between the two fuel sources, maximising fuel economy.

What's The Catch?

Ultimately, electric vehicles aren’t actually emission-free, as the power to run them has to be generated by a power station, which are typically fossil-fuel powered. Also, the batteries within the electric vehicles need to be replaced every 3-5 years or so. However, hybrid vehicles do help to reduce emissions, but not to the same extent as LPG.
